An inflammatory disease that might be linked to the coronavirus has left one young boy dead and hospitalized 11 children in Westchester County, officials said today.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧The children have been diagnosed with what medical professionals are calling "pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome."

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧The 11 hospitalized children, ranging in age from a few months old to teenagers, have tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies as well as the virus itself, officials said.

"Recently there has been a relatively small number of children who might also be infected with COVID-19 who are having a post-viral syndrome," Westchester County Commissioner of Health Dr. Sherlita Amler said during a briefing on Zoom.

The children that have been impacted began presenting symptoms four to six weeks after initial exposure to the coronavirus disease.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Friday a 5-year-old boy died in New York City associated with the illness and other potential cases were being investigated around the state.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧"This is every parent’s nightmare, right," Cuomo said at a coronavirus briefing at Marist College in Poughkeepsie.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧Cuomo said the potential spread of this affliction "would be really painful news and would open up an entirely different chapter."

"We thought that children might be vehicles of transmission," he said. "But we didn’t think children would suffer from it. Caution to all people who again may have believed that their child couldn’t be affected by COVID."

The news was revealed one day after state officials said New York may have 64 potential cases幸运飞艇4码选号技巧 of children coming down with the coronavirus-linked inflammatory disease.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧The state Department of Health late Wednesday issued an advisory to health care providers about the serious inflammatory disease affecting children throughout the state.

More than 50 children in Westchester have been hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus thus far, Amler said.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧"In the whole picture of the total COVID experience in childhood, this remains a relatively infrequent possibility," Dr. Michael Gewitz, the physician-in-chief of Maria Fareri Children's Hospital, said during today's Zoom call.

County officials said it is too early to tell if this new condition is caused by or related to COVID-19, but offered examples of symptoms parents should be aware of.

Symptoms include:

  • persistent fever lasting more than four days
  • abdominal pain, which could be severe
  • vomiting or diarrhea.
  • body rash, which could start on the body and extend to the extremities
  • swollen hands or feet, peeling of the skin
  • enlarged lymph nodes.

County officials did not share how medical professionals plan to treat children diagnosed with pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome, but said most cases have good outcomes.

幸运飞艇4码选号技巧"If you've COVID positive individuals within your household, and if your children have either tested positive or been exposed to COVID and then they develop these kind of symptoms, that it's worth reaching out to whoever takes care of your children," Amler said.
